Who are we?

Make Polluters Pay is a campaign to build public support for climate litigation and other efforts to hold fossil fuel companies accountable.
  • 1

We're holding Big Oil accountable for the damage they’ve done to our health, communities, and the climate.

  • 2

Big Oil has known about climate change since the 1970s.

  • 3

The impacts of extreme climate events are already costing the U.S. an estimated $150 billion a year.

  • 4

Americans are paying higher prices at the pump and billions for climate disasters, all so the industry can keep pulling in record profits.

  • 5

It's time to level the playing field.

Join us and help make polluters pay!

Why did we come together? → Our communities are paying the price for Big Oil’s climate damages and deception. Our neighbors are losing their homes, and sometimes even their lives, to fires, floods, and extreme heat. Cities and states are spending billions to respond to non stop climate disasters and extreme weather events. But instead of paying their fair share for the damage they’ve caused, fossil fuel companies continue to rake in massive profits at our expense.

How do we know we can be successful? → There is a growing global effort to hold Big Oil accountable for their climate disinformation and the damage they’re doing. Cases in South Africa, the Netherlands, the United States, and beyond are already making their way through the courts. In the United States, 46 states, cities, and municipalities, representing more than a quarter of the U.S. population, are suing fossil fuel companies for fraud and climate damages. Multiple states are working to pass “climate superfund” bills that would make polluters pay for climate damages. There are also Congressional investigations underway into Big Oil disinformation.

Modeled on the Truth Campaign that went after Big Tobacco, Make Polluters Pay is building a groundswell of public support behind legal and political efforts to hold the fossil fuel industry accountable for climate damages.
